Thaddeus C. “Ted” Zylka, 86, of St. Clair Shores, formerly of Standish, passed away peacefully June 24, 2019, surrounded by family.

Ted was born in Detroit to Zygmunt and Jennie (nee Mazur) Zylka. He attended St. Stephens Catholic Elementary School and Chadsey High and Trade School where he specialized in culinary arts. Ted was drafted into the Korean War and served in the Army’s 24th Infantry Division. He was a sought-after chef in the service, ensuring that his fellow infantrymen, officers and traveling celebrities were well-fed.

After the service, Ted was employed in various restaurants in the Detroit area, and he met and he married his loving wife, Mary (nee Krstich), at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Detroit in 1957. Ted and Mary moved to Standish and made their home there for 40 years. Ted owned and operated the Timbers Restaurant and then The Trading Post Restaurant for more than 35 years. He also owned and operated Standish Caged Eggs. Ted had an affinity for animals. On a farm outside of town, he and his family raised various animals and he created a home for many retired animals from the Detroit Zoo. It was common to see ducks, chickens, peacocks, llamas, sheep, rams, goats, cats and a donkey all clamoring across the field when they saw Ted’s van driving down Grove Road to deliver food to them. Steers and buffalo were part of the menagerie at various times as well.

Ted enjoyed woodworking, helping out at the church and fishing along the Rifle River in the spring, and he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus.

Ted’s wife and his parents predeceased him.

He is survived by his brothers, Zygmund (Arlene) and John (Inge) Zylka; and by his sister, Sophie (Ronald) Gozdor; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ted is also survived by his children, Thad (Peg) Zylka, Jeanette (Michael) Franck, Lydia (Rodney) Armstrong and Christine (Robert) Welch. Grandchildren Ryan and Christian Franck, Anna, Mary and Sarah Armstrong, Oak and Brooke Welch as well as Reid Rodarmel and Alexis (Sean) Miller survive him and they are blessed with many great “Dziadzia” stories to be shared.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Standish. Visitation will begin at the church at 9 a.m. A luncheon in the church hall will follow Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church, 423 W. Cedar St., Standish, MI 48658. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel.
