Three-on-three mixer to be held March 10

STANDISH — A three-on-three basketball tournament to raise funds for the Standish-Sterling girls basketball team is scheduled to be held at the SSC gymnasium March 10.

Coach Alyssa Gulvas said the cost to participate is $25 per person, which guarantees 10 games. However, there is no guarantee players will have the same teammates, as the tournament is a mixer, meaning each game new teams are drawn. The top players can still walk away with a prize, though, Gulvas said.

“The top three individual scorers per bracket will receive awards,” she said.

Male and female divisions for grades 4-6, 7-9, JV and varsity and adult men and women are available. Each division starts play at a different time, with JV and varsity checking in at 8:30 a.m. and playing from 9-11 a.m. Seventh through ninth grades check in at 11 and play from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fourth through sixth grades check in at 1:30 p.m. and play from 2-4 p.m., and adults start playing at 4:30 p.m. with check-in starting a half-hour prior.

Gulvas said all of the proceeds benefit the varsity girls basketball program.

“This is going to raise funds for our summer leagues, any summer camps, practice jerseys, that kind of stuff,” she said.

The mixer was held for many years under former varsity coach Kevin King, but when he resigned as coach, it was defunct before last year, Gulvas said.

“We brought it back last year for the first time,” she said.

Participants are encouraged to register by March 7. Each player gets a T-shirt. For more information, contact Gulvas at 989-980-9861.
