Two sentenced for roles in bringing drugs into jail

STANDISH — Barbara Cunningham and Deanna Shiel were sentenced in 23rd Circuit Court April 19 for their roles in bringing drugs into the Arenac County Jail using newspaper sticker ads and stamps.

Both pleaded guilty to controlled substance delivery March 1, and in return a charge of conspiracy to commit criminal enterprise was dismissed for the two defendants.

Cunningham, 40, of Standish, received the stiffest sentence of the three. She was sentenced to 23 months to seven years in prison with credit of 44 days served.

Shiel, 24, of Saginaw, was sentenced to six months in jail and credited with 103 days. She was also placed on probation for two years and had her driver’s license suspended for one year.

A third co-defendant charged with controlled substance delivery, Tamarra Carpenter, 24, of Pinconning was originally scheduled to be sentenced on April 19, but her hearing was adjourned until May 3.

Two other co-defendants in the case, Jodi Tomich, 23, of Twining, and Joni Kedron, 29, of Sterling, were previously sentenced in the case. Kedron was sentenced to 29 months to seven years in prison and Tomich was sentenced to six months in jail and probation.

A sixth defendant, Dustin Kennedy, 34, of Saginaw, is also yet to be sentenced.

Court documents allege Kennedy delivered two newspapers to Shiel in December, and that the newspapers included strips of suboxone affixed to sticker advertisements. He allegedly paid Tomich $50 per strip of suboxone, with the payments going toward a debt Shiel owed to Kedron and Tomich.

Court documents show Tomich allegedly met with the male suspect believed to have delivered the narcotics in Standish Dec. 23 after buying newspapers. Cunningham and Carpenter also allegedly conspired with Kedron to bring five suboxone strips into the jail affixed to an envelope.
