PaleoJoe digs up the truth at the Library

STANDISH — Archaeologist PaleoJoe stopped by the Mary Johnston Memorial Library on Tuesday afternoon to show children of all ages fossils, teeth and other prehistoric bones. Some of the highlights were a T-Rex tooth, a baby mammoth tooth, and a pre-historic deer vertebrae.

Reptiles at the library

STANDISH — Kids of all ages got to touch and feel real live reptiles at the Mary Johnston Memorial Library in downtown Standish on Thursday. The reptiles were brought into town by REPTILE Inc. owner Michael Brophy of Troy.

Cheese Town Festival

PINCONNING — Young and old enjoy the Cheese Town Festival on Thursday at Doc Lecht Park in Downtown Pinconning. The Festival ran through June 20.

First Day of 2010 Summerfest

STANDISH — Audience members enjoy a concert by the Rifle River Folk Strings outside of the Standish Historical Depot on Thursday. The weather was beautiful with temperatures in the 70's during the evening.

Caring bear picnic

STANDISH — Saint Mary's of Michigan Standish Hospital held their annual Caring Bear Picnic on Thursday, June 17, outside of their main hospital branch on M-61. Over 123 children visited the hospital for the picnic.

High waters

Sterling — Waters on the Rifle River rose steadily over the weekend. On Sunday evening the national weather service said that the Rifle River had reached it's flood stage level at six feet, and that it was expected to rise to six point two feet. Rifle River Campground Manager Laurie Laurie Richardson said that the river was moving so fast that they lost their dock to the current. "I’ve been here 45-years and we’ve never lost a dock," she said until the campgrounds dock floated away late Sunday night. "It rose a good six feet. I've never seen it rise so fast.” Check back for a complete story.

Pinconning Varsity Softball — Regionals vs. Fremont, …

GAYLORD — The Pinconning varsity softball team took on Fremont in their opening regional game Saturday, June 12 at St. Mary's in Gaylord. The Spartans won the regional title later that afternoon.

AE grads turn the page on high school

The Arenac Eastern senior class of 2010 said goodbye to high school one last time during its commencement ceremony in the Arenac Eastern High School gymnasium June 6.

Powwow draws young and the old together

STANDISH — The third annual Honoring Saganing Powwow took place behind the Saganing Tribal Center on Worth Road in Standish. The event started on Saturday and ends Sunday evening.
